As its name suggests, the Sofitel Legend the Grand Amsterdam has a long, and illustrious history. But, what makes this 300 year old Grande Dame one of the best luxury hotels in the canal district, is how remarkably well she’s aged. She had help though, of course, courtesy of Interior Architect Sybille de Margerie whose deft facelift is closer to artistry than a brick and mortar renovation work. The result, is a confluence of styles and epochs. The contemporary rooms come with large period windows, front seats to the constant to-and-fro of boats across the canal. In the lobby, the old-world-grandeur of high ceilings and marble floors juxtapose with delicate light installations, whilst in the ballrooms, painstaking efforts have gone into preserving all of the original art-deco glory where Dutch Royal weddings were celebrated. For the hotel’s crown jewel, head to the Bridges, a Michelin star restaurant with uninterrupted views over the townhouses and canals of the city.
