The hotel at a glance
It’s a day like any other in Paris. On the roundabout of the Arc de Triomphe, tourists crowd the pavements, iphones and Kodak’s snapping away at every inch of the city. As I drive by their attention shifts to me.They gawk at me or maybe it’s at the monument… I don’t know, whatever it is, I’ve never seen so many cameras pointed in my direction before.
I like the attention, but I should keep my ego in check, i’m not the star here. The classic Rolls Royce Phantom i’m in however, will be a talking point in the four corners of the world once this jolly crowd returns home… it’ll probably be one of mine too.
The Peninsula’s Rolls takes me to see the sights in Paris. Coddled within the leather and air conditioned interiors, I go round the Arc de Triomphe, down the glittering Champs Elysées and opposite the Eiffel Tower until I stop, and the Peninsula’s page boys open the doors and welcome me back. I’m home.
For a week or so, the Peninsula Paris is my address and for a week or so, I do my best to forget that I will eventually have to leave. I spend my time in the spa, checking off the hotel’s exhaustive treatment list, or being a flaneur in the city streets and raiding boutiques before returning and dipping into the cool waters of the pool.
My evenings are spent at the l’Oiseau Blanc with a friend. The rooftop restaurant’s gigantic glass cupola lets in the sun and by the time daylight becomes shy, out thirst has singlehandedly exhausted Xavier Thuizat, the hotel’s Sommelier, until we eventually end our evenings out on the rooftop discussing the finer points of life.
My mornings are spent on the Kléber terrace, which I enjoy with a steaming cup of coffee in hand and my head in the clouds as I watch Paris shuffle by over my unread newspaper. The headlines scream at me like harbingers of doom, alerting my attention to crises happening all over. But they will have to wait. A young lady, has lost her shoe to a crack on the avenue, she giggles as she puts it back on and blushes as her male friend tries not to smile. In this quiet moment, there is nothing more important.
