Amid the traffic jam and sunbed logjams of its tourist hotspots, people often say Bali is spoiled, but check into the Soori Bali imagined by architect Soo K. Chan, and you’ll find “old Bali” never really disappeared...it just went a little west. The setting of the hotel, between Mount Batukaru and terraced paddy fields is picture-postcard Bali, but throw in the gorgeous black-sand beach out front, the water pools around and the gardens landscaped to maximise the flow of air, and you’ve got a winning hand for a Bali holiday with a restful feel. Befitting the setting, the hotel’s restaurants and spa keep things pure- and undisputedly Balinese- with ingredients curated from nearby farms, and spices from its own garden. This hotel is not a monument; it’s a taste of the villages and local culture of the west coast of Bali, and it’s a luxury retreat at its best.
