When it first opened in 1975, the One&Only Le Saint Géran was a hotel like no other in Mauritius. It was built on 60 acres of tropical gardens, and it sat right on the island’s best beach, on a sheltered bay. Without trying, the hotel drew celebrities and royalty, from Princess Caroline of Monaco to Nelson Mandela and the Gipsy Kings. Fast-forward to today, and not much has changed about this island classic...except that, after a nine-month renovation, she is looking smarter, slicker and sexier than ever before. The rooms have been entirely reimagined to be light and uncluttered spaces- think wood-effect floor tiles, marble bathrooms and furnishings in a crisp color palette of white, cream and blue-grey neutrality. Elsewhere, the changes are even more dramatic. At the pan-Asian restaurant Tapasake, which replaced an Indian restaurant, the menu is as creative as it gets this side of the world, with dishes like Japanese beef served with pumpkin purée and sea bass roasted with pomegranate. Then there is the laid-back La Pointe eatery, with its thatched structure, and menu of freshly grilled seafood. On a shaded lagoon-view deck, or directly on the sand, experience barefoot dining like a true islander. For weary souls, the hotel also boasts an expanded and revamped ESPA spa, set across wood cabins around a palm-fringed pool. Adventure, curated experiences or seclusion when you need it...Le Saint Géran ticks all the right boxes for an island getaway.
