L'oscar

London, United Kingdom

French architect Jacques Garcia left no stone unturned when it came to transforming this former church into Holborn’s most decadent hotel, and it’s as theatrical- and bohemian- as you’d expect…

He is the man behind the swanky interiors of hotels like La Mamounia in Marrakech and the NoMad in New York City, but step into this former Baptist church in the heart of Holborn and you’ll have a renewed respect for his mastery of infusing historical architectural elements with a quirky vibe. L'Oscar is profoundly traditional- think stained-glass windows that bathe the lobby and lounge areas in streaks of golden light, opulent chandeliers and polished alcoves where black stone statues take place of pride- but the hotel has been given a costume change of velvet screens, plush furnishings and gaudily patterned carpets everywhere you look. The Baptist Grill is a work of art. Housed in what used to be a soaring octagonal chapel with a glass dome, it’s the playground of chef Tony Fleming and it’s every bit as regal as the name suggests with a hand-painted ceiling and stucco sculptures on the walls. The rooms are just as richly decorated with lots of silk, damasks and a private fireplace in most. For a city break that borders on the unforgettable, L’Oscar is the place to be in London…
