The lakeside setting of Les Sources de Caudalie, amid the vineyards of a 600-year-old winery, makes it the stuff of travel dreams, but don’t be impressed just yet. There is a lot more happening at this wine country retreat, from its rustic design of uneven oak beams and weathered pantiles, woven around the landscape to the wildflower-fringed pond outside that makes for a postcard perfect rural hamlet. Then, of course, the spa with its treatments that use hot spring water drawn from the ground under is another reason to visit. It’s the world's first wine spa, and the grape rituals and outdoor “wine barrel” hot tub can't be beat for pure, unashamed relaxation to views of the surrounding vineyards. For more wine country indulgence, the hotel’s cellars with thousands of vintages grown by the château next door are something special, while the two Michelin-star La Grand’Vigne restaurant takes its cuisine as seriously as the fine wines it serves. This is Bordeaux like it’s meant to be experienced, with plenty of fresh air and more French art de vivre than you’ll have time to experience in one visit.
